UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME #UBI

The idea of a universal basic income – giving citizens a no-strings attached monthly stipend directly from the government – is not a new idea. This blog isn’t a history lesson – although that documentation can be found here, but UBI almost became United States policy due to the work of Martin Luther King, Jr under Nixon’s administration.

History didn’t play out that way.

Americans are hurting.

Americans are starving.

Americans are unsheltered.

Americans aren’t marrying.

Americans aren’t reproducing.

Americans are ready for a change.

And the Great Resignation proves it.

Americans are leaving jobs without a safety net or a means to replace that income.

Americans are suffering with unknown long-term consequences of a once in a century pandemic.

And the pandemic exposed all of our national weaknesses.

Poverty.

Discrimination.

Subjugation.

Americans financially strained and mentally exhausted.

We need a break.

And that break comes in the form of guaranteed monthly cash assistance.

Universal. Basic. Income.

It’s more than a check.

It’s a means to a better life.

And I’ve previously proven that we can afford it.

The biggest argument against it, albeit unfounded and easily debunked by data from UBI case studies, is that UBI would be a disincentive to work.

I would counter that argument is, why do we have to work?

For the first time since the dawn of civilization, humans can have our cake and eat it too.

We can have a booming economy and we can have a strong social safety net.

We have the technology to replace much of the human workforce.

We can pay people to stay at home, safely in a pandemic, with their families.

We can pay people to stay at home to mentally and physically recover.

We can pay people to exist.

We have the data.

All that we need the political will.

And I aim to build that will in D.C.

Guaranteed Minimum Wage

‪$2,000/month – minimum – Universal Basic Income

‪$1,400 from the fed, states can opt-in an extra $600 – minimum. Costlier States can pay more.‬

‪Replaces unemployment insurance and cash benefits other than SSI/SSDI.‬

Guaranteed Minimum Wage takes the power of food and shelter away from employers creating a safety net for unionization.

Paid for by instituting a backdated payroll replacement tax that forces corporations to pay a tax percentage in line

with how much of their workforce they have automated since the rise of robotics in the 1970s.

Further funding can be achieved by implementing luxury and corporate focused Value Added Taxes.

VAT is better than Wealth Taxes because the tax is collected at point of sale – making it harder for overpaid CPAs to dodge them.

We can secure even additional funding by regulating cryptocurrency and implementing a federally based cryptocurrency.

Profits can be fed into the #GMW fund and/or into the public option based healthcare system.

While reviewing cryptocurrency regulatory options, we can also start drafting a 21st Century Digital Bill of Rights.

Deets On The MINIMUM WAGE

Too Little For Too Long

No matter what number we try to legislate – $15, $25, $35 – it won’t work.

America has 50 different State economies feeding into the larger American economy.

A one size fits all solution will not work.

That’s why I propose a minimum wage Constitutional amendment that requires States, territories, and the Federal Government to recalculate their minimum wages annually based on their specific economies.
